Sophie Schmalenberger - New PhD at the Department of Global Studies

Sophie Schmalenberger will be working on a PhD-project focusing on far-right populism in Germany

My name is Sophie Schmalenberger and since 1st September I am a PhD Student at the School of Culture and Society affiliated to the European Studies section. Together with my supervisor Christoffer Leiding Kølvraa and co-supervisor Wulf Kansteiner (History) I will develop a PhD-project focusing on far-right populism in Germany: At the interface of right-wing extremism research, populist communication literature and memory studies I will aim to fill a gap in existing academic work by investigating how the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) manoeuvres between ethnocentric ideas, nationalist Euroscepticism and a German post-Holocaust politico-cultural context.

I hold a B.A. in Media and Communication Studies from Freie Universität Berlin (2015) and a M.A. in European Studies from Aarhus University (2017), was an Erasmus-student at the University of Gothenburg in 2013, spent 4 months as intern with a Hungarian NGO in Budapest in 2016 and have worked at Freie Universität Berlin´s Press and Communication Office until July 2018.  In my spare time I like to learn (about) languages (still working on my Danish and happy to be talked to in Danish) as well as a good mix of mental (reading, writing, music) and physical (running, swimming, generally being outdoors) activities and love to spend my holidays doing volunteer work on ecological farms throughout Europe.
