This talk introduces a new research project led by the Pitt Rivers Museum in partnership with the Refugee Studies Centre at the University of Oxford (funded by AHRC and ESRC, 2016-2019). "Architectures of Displacement" combines contemporary archaeology, anthropology and documentary film-making to explore the lived experiences of temporary accommodation for refugees in the Middle East and Europe. Using the example of the so-called "Jungle" at Calais, the talk considers how archaeology can not only document impermanence, but can also explore the connections between time, governance and the built environment in the context of forced migration.
Discussants:
Laura McAtackney, Associate professor, Department of Archaelogy and Heritage Management
Karen Waltorp, Assistant professor, Department of Anthropology
After the talk, there will be a reception at Moesgaard canteen (building 4206) at 16:00. All are welcome!
