The Reformation period has changed medieval Europe within hardly a century and thus marks a time of transformation between the medieval and the early modern world. Besides the rebuilding and modernization of existing castles, this period also saw emerging of completely new castles as strongholds. The conference will have a look on the development in the castle and fortification building of the epoque and asks for the political und architectural conditions in Middle and Northern Europe during the reformation period. The international and interdisciplinary conference will have a look at the main points in the area around the Baltic Sea, especially the Scandinacian realms. The lectures will bring to discussion current research on castles and fortifications from the Baltics, Denmark, Germany and Sweden.
