Academic Visitor at the Institute of Classical Studies, London

From 1 March to 1 June 2020, PhD Student Nikoline Sauer will be an Academic Visitor at the Institute of Classical Studies (ICS) at the School of Advanced Study, University of London. The research stay abroad is part of her PhD studies at Centre for Urban Network Evolutions, Aarhus University.

Nikoline’s PhD project is part of the Danish-Italian excavations at the Forum of Caesar in Rome. On the basis of archaeological evidence, the aim of her research is to critically study the widely accepted assumption of formation and development of urban Rome in the Archaic period (620–480 BCE). This subject will be investigated through her doctoral thesis consisting of four articles, which all have the site of Caesar’s Forum as their point of departure.

During her stay at the ICS, Nikoline will be working on the last two articles of her doctoral thesis. Furthermore, she has been invited to present two papers on her current research. One at a lunch seminar at the ICS (11 March 2020) and the other at the workshop ‘Italy Before history: New Research and New Perspectives on Iron Italy’ held at Cambridge University (4 April 2020).

The Institute of Classical Studies is a research institution associated with the University of London and a member of the School of Advanced Study. It is a national and international research institute focussing on the languages, literature, history, art, archaeology and philosophy of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. The director of the institute is Greg Woolf, one of the world’s leading experts on the Roman Empire. As the institute will hence provide an international acclaimed research environment – as well as one of the best libraries within Classical Studies – the research stay abroad will hopefully be a productive and rewarding experience.
