Research Unit for the History of Religion

History of Religion

The research unit for the History of Religion at the Department of the Study of Religion unifies researchers, PhD students and Master’s degree students in a continuous discussion and exchange environment around the history of religion in general. The academic field ‘History of Religion’ encompasses phenomenology of religion, general theories about religion and culture, and empirical religions, past and present. Methodically, the field covers philosophy and the history of ideas, historical and philological approaches (supplemented by fields like archaeology), and anthropology.

The unit's work

The research unit provides a common forum for researchers in religions who want to combine their (very different) competences with general religious, historical theories, and methodological discussions. The unit has arranged an ongoing reading and debating process about religious history and cultural evolution, about renunciation, and about ontologies. In the fall semester 2017, the common theme is ontologies with focus on a reading of Philippe Descola's Beyond Nature and Culture (2014).

All meetings are lunch meetings on Wednesdays at 12.05-13.00, and all staff, students, and guests are welcome to attend.

Related education

The research unit relates to teaching and PhD supervision in phenomenology of religion, tribal and archaic religious history, Israelite-Jewish history of religion, Indian religions, Islam, Christianity and the history of modern Christianity, religion, philosophy, ethics, and the history of religious studies.
