Abstract:

The talk will explore a canonical yet under-researched event in the history of contemporary Brazilian music: the release of Hip Hop Cultura de Rua and O Som das Ruas, considered to be the pioneering records of Brazilian rap. As the country consolidated its return to democracy, hip-hop enthusiasts were drawn to the prevailing agenda of social change, while also eager to turn their craft into a viable career. A closer examination of the albums and the rappers' experiences allows for a discussion of the limitations of the new democratic regime and an analysis of the emerging forms of sociability within São Paulo's new urban landscape.

The Research Colloquium is an informal space where visiting researchers and CEBRAGA members discuss ongoing projects. Everyone is welcome, no registration needed.
