The Eurovision Song Contest is visually and narratively presented as a contest between discrete contries: Singers represent countries, votes are given to countries, and country names are used as a shorthand for performers, performances and audiences: “Next up, Malta”, “no votes from Sweden to Denmark”, “Nobody loves the UK” etc. However the contest also plays a huge role for migrants and diasporas. This presentation explores the representation of and discussions about migrants and diasporas in the Eurovision Song Contest focusing in particular on Turkey, Armenia, Portugal and Romania.
