As an experienced metal detector archaeologist, you can become a mentor and help a veteran into a meaningful hobby.

Every year, soldiers from the Danish Armed Forces return home from deployment in international missions. For some, it can be difficult to find their way back home to family, community and, not least, themselves. Metal detector archaeology provides opportunities for outdoor life, physical activity, socializing and the feeling of contributing to something bigger - all of which are essential for mental and social well-being. This makes metal detector archaeology a meaningful hobby that can improve quality of life.

How can I help?

The veteran is given the opportunity to borrow a detector and a pin-pointer, but may not know much about archaeology and use of metal detectors. As a mentor, your role is to introduce the veteran to the hobby by:

  • inviting the veteran on field trips
  • instructing in the technical and formal side of metal detector archaeology - such as reporting finds to the museum, identifying finds, etc.
  • introduce the veteran to the social aspects of metal detector archaeology - such as the association, search buddies, Facebook, etc.

But before you get started, you will be prepared for the role in a conversation with the project coordinator.

What do you get out of participating?

As a mentor, you make a difference for a person who has made an effort for Denmark. In recognition and appreciation of your efforts, you will receive the program's “VETEKTOR BUDDY” label

Worth knowing

If you are interested in becoming a mentor, you will be thoroughly prepared through materials, a conversation with the project manager and more. In addition, you should know that:

  • all project participants commit to abide by the DAA code of ethics for amateur archaeologists
  • your mentee veteran commits to respecting the trust you show by inviting him or her to your sites
  • the project cannot offer you anything for your efforts or reimburse costs such as gasoline etc.
