Veterans in Archeology

The health-promoting potential of metal detector archaeology

The research and innovation project Veterans in Archaeology is the framework for the VETEKTOR Buddy program - a mentoring scheme that introduces veterans with PTSD or other post-deployment injuries to metal detector archaeology.

Recent research suggests that metal detector archaeology can improve veterans' quality of life: participating in a meaningful hobby that requires technical skill and discipline and involves movement outside gives veterans peace of mind and increased self-esteem. With Veterans in Archaeology, we want to give more veterans the opportunity to become metal detector archaeologists - and thus both feel better and contribute to documenting Danish history through their finds.

Veterans in Archaeology develops the VETEKTOR Buddy mentoring scheme and produces knowledge about how archaeology and cultural heritage more generally can help people with PTSD or other mental health challenges to a better life.
