Today we are faced with pervasive worry about the future of democracy. Confronted by military aggression, populism, misinformation and disruptive technologies, democracy appears outgunned and out-of-date. Yet, this is also a moment when discussions extend beyond democracy's short-term survival to what democracy might become and how it might be imagined. The research programme Political Futurity examines the conditions and the challenges to such wider political imaginings. It seeks out actors, sites, and practices by and through which different futures are being formulated. It also attends to how futures were imagined in the past, examining these past futures as visions that shaped political expectations and institutions in their own time and into the present.
Political Futurity mobilises the notion of Political Futurity to capture wider-ranging, often near-utopian, thinking and practice which think the future beyond what is already in view and imagine identities, societies, and the planet in altered form.
