Who was Apollos of Alexandria, what role did he play in the Corinthian congregation, and, not least, what did he teach its members? A close reading of Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians aims to shed light on these issues. The letter will be compared with other 1st century Alexandrian literature, such as the Book of Wisdom and treatises of Philo, but also with one of the Nag Hammadi-texts, Eugnostos the Blessed. Surprisingly the latter displays common ground with the speculation on wisdom, God, and epistemology as it is attested especially in 1 Cor 1–4.
