Speaker: Dr. Paulo Sousa, Senior Lecturer in Cognitive Anthropology and Director of Institute of Cognition and Culture, Queen’s University Belfast.

Abstract: Drawing from debates in anthropology, psychology and philosophy, the talk will discuss how moral norms are conceptualized and the extent to which moral norms are variable. Contrary to some positions that emphasize the role of feelings or affective competencies, it will be argued that moral norms are understood in terms of a somewhat rich conceptual structure. Contrary to some positions that emphasize extreme variation in moral norms, it will be argued that the conceptual structure of moral norms is universal and constrains this variation.
