What constitutes all-things-considered reasons?

Friday 25 September 2015,  at 12:30 - 14:30

This talk investigates how response-dependence theories might contribute to an understanding of all-things-considered reasons. In our judgements about what we should do, agents do something the possibility of which might otherwise seem mystifying: We weigh reasons of different – sometimes seemingly incommensurable – kinds against each other, and come to a decision about an all-things-considered desirable course of action. Could such judgements – with suitable idealisations – provide the basis of an account of all-things-considered reasons? We shall consider some problems and promises of such proposals, and some of the variety that this framework can accommodate. The talk will also offer some general considerations on, and comparisons between, all-things-considered reasons for action and belief.
