The Late Petra Project is aimed at understanding settlement patterns in the Petra region and their chronologically significant aspects during the post-Byzantine period. This phase of research follows a comparative study of several Islamic-period ceramic assemblages and the development of a preliminary, local ceramic chronology based on the combined results of typological analysis and stratigraphy. The project aims at contributing to bridge an important gap, both chronological (the one concerning the later historical periods in Petra), and territorial (the one concerning the significance of the connection of the Petra Valley with its hinterland and neighboring regions). The ceramic chronology resulting from this work has allowed expanding the analysis of ceramics from stratified assemblages to assemblages from surveys. Results have allowed to substantially revise traditional theories according to which Petra was more or less abandoned after the Byzantine period. Ceramic finds demonstrate that there are no gaps in settlement of the Petra region through the whole Islamic period; moreover, it is also possible to advance observations on the changing settlement patterns and dynamics through time.
