From a slate of highly regarded nominations, the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) has selected Troels Myrup Kristensen as Samuel H. Kress Lecturer in Ancient Art for the 2018/2019 academic year.

“I am absolutely thrilled to be taking up the Kress Lectureship. It’s a great privilege and honour to be able to present my research to such a wide audience across North America,” says Troels Myrup Kristensen, who is an associate professor at the Department of History and Classical Studies at Aarhus University and Director of the Classical Antiquity and its Heritage research programme.

As Kress Lecturer, Kristensen will be addressing 12 to 13 AIA societies throughout the United States and Canada with the purpose of bringing important developments in the field of archaeology to the general public.

The ancient world and its heritage
The Samuel H. Kress Lectureship is awarded to the most accomplished archaeologists based on their research merits. Kristensen’s research fields lie broadly within the study of visual culture in the ancient world, the material culture of ancient pilgrimage, late antique art and archaeology, and the contemporary consumption of heritage.

Currently Troels Myrup Kristensen is working on a monograph on the archaeology of ancient pilgrimage as part of the Sapere Aude research project entitled “The Emergence of Sacred Travel: Experience, Economy, and Connectivity in Ancient Mediterranean Pilgrimage”, a project which he has directed since 2013. He is also Work Package Leader in the Horizon2020 project called “Critical Heritages (CoHERE): performing and representing identities in Europe.”
