The research unit is composed of researchers from different theological and other disciplines. The interdisciplinary approach is central to the unit's work.

The focus of the unit's work is on theological, philosophical and ethical challenges in contemporary society. The approach can be fundamental in nature, addressing issues such as diakonia, humanity and justice. At the same time, major cultural and societal challenges such as migration, climate, health and welfare are key areas for the unit. The unit's issues thus also fall within the area known as public theology.

The research unit was established in April 2025 and is part of the research programme affiliated with the Department of Theology at the Department of Culture and Society, Aarhus University.
