Aarhus Universitets segl

Nadia Safwat - New PhD student at the Department of Anthropology

Nadia Safwat will be researching the relationship between grandchildren and grandparents in families with diasporic background in Denmark.

I have a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and a master’s degree in visual anthropology from Aarhus University where I will now start a three year PhD project, researching the releationship between grandchildren and grandparents in families with diasporic background in Denmark.

The project combines theoretical inquiries in memory, kinship and migration with methodological interests in arts-based and participatory methods. I hope to engage multiple generations in a collaborative exploration of what notions of family history, memory work and intergenerationality mean in migratory family contexts. Together we will question how generations are used as a cultural resource among both grandchildren and grandparents, and explore the affects, memories and everyday practices which create or break bonds of relatedness between generations.

My main supervisor is Mikkel Rytter, and the project is shaped in collaboration with KØN – Gender Museum Denmark.
