This lecture will focus on a recent Executive Order by President Trump that forbids publicly funded institutions from characterizing groups of people. The order effectively forbids social scientists from studying people by gender, race, income, occupation, etc…. The point of the order is not to end social science, but to defund educational institutions that teach, for example, that the United States is “a racist country.” Critical Race Theory, in particular, has been cited, even by moderates, as instilling the wrong values. How did a country that prides itself on free speech get here?  And what does it tell us about the limits of liberal notions of freedom? Finally, what does all of this have to do with declining white life expectancies in white rural America?
