Abstract
This lecture will focus on the major developments in the research and study of Israel and Palestine in modern times. It will point to the transition from focus on Israel studies to Palestine studies and will assess the impact of the settler colonial paradigm and indigenous studies on our understanding of the modern history of Israel and Palestine. The last section of the lecture will be an attempt to assess the possible historiographical developments in the future, with particular focus on the impact of the dramatic events since 2023 on the historiography of the country.

ILAN PAPPE er født i 1954 i Haifa af tysk-jødiske forældre, som flygtede fra nazisterne i 1930’erne. Han er uddannet i historie fra Det Hebraiske Universitet i Jerusalem i 1978, blev dr.phil. fra Oxford University i 1984 og var i mange år seniordocent i statskundskab ved Haifa Universitet. I 2007 blev han professor i historie ved University of Exeters Institut for Arabiske og Islamiske Studier, og siden 2009 har han desuden været leder af European Centre for Palestine Studies, ligeledes ved University of Exeter. Pappe har skrevet et stort antal bøger, heriblandt Den etniske udrensning af Palæstina, Det moderne Palæstinas historie og En kort historie om Israel-Palæstina-konflikten.
