Profile

Marie Beukel Bak is a PhD Fellow in History at Aarhus University. In her PhD project, Gender, Women and War – A Space of Transformation, Bak examines how Danish women negotiated the meaning and possibilites of their new citizenship following the introduction of full women's suffrage in 1915. The project explores how ideas of motherhood and femininity were mobilised to define and legitimise women’s participation in society in a Denmark that was neutral but affected by the First World War (1914–1918).

The project focuses on how women navigated and negotiated their changing position in society at a time marked by both democratic transformation and war in Europe. It examines these negotiations across three domains: peace activism, humanitarian work and literary representations.
