I'm a classical archaeologist with a PhD from Aarhus University (2020), an MA from the University of Cologne (2016), and a BA from the University of Groningen (2013).
I study portraits from the Roman period with a focus on materials and production. In addition to my research, I am committed to making classical archaeology accessible and engaging. I developed an archaeological outreach program for the Danish NGO Videnskabsklubben (running since 2024 in 14 schools across Denmark), completed a science communication course, and aim to further expand my outreach portfolio in the coming years.
My reserach focusses on portraiture from the Roman period. Currently, I am working as a Postdoc in the project Locally Crafted Empires, headed by Rubina Raja and funded by the Carlsberg Foundation. Within the project I will focus on the portraiture from Roman period Egypt.
In my PhD I studied the production of Palmyrene portraits, including a detailed study of tool traces, the structure and scope of the production and the carvers' and customers' influence on the final product. The topic of my MA thesis was gender and socialisation through the depiction of children in the funerary sphere.
I also (co)published articles on the funerary sculpture from Palmyra, the archival materials of the Danish archaeologist Harald Ingholt and reuse practices in Antiquity.
Spring 2018: Master Classical Archaeology / Topic II – Portraits in Classical Antiquity: Workshops and Production Economy
Fall 2024: Bachelor Classical Studies / Studium Generale
Master Classical Archaeology / Kulturhistorisk Seminar II - The Making of Portraits
Master Classical Archaeology / Kulturhistorisk Seminar II - Dissemination workshop
During my PhD I took the course: Introduction to University Teaching for PhD students.
My work in collaboration with Videnskabsklubben is my first step into my journey into scientific outreach. I have develeoped educational activities that explain archaeology and archaeological science in a vivid way to school children, also providing background information on each topic. The program will, for the first time, start in 10 schools all over Denmark. Mentors from the 10 gymnasiums will lead the mini-reseracher (4th and 5th grade) through the program.
I took a course in Science Outreach at DMJX, learning more about outreach via different media such as newspapers, websites, and podcasts.
I am co-organizer of a course at the Folkeuniversitet (winter 2024) where I will also be giving a talk on lost cities myself.
