This dissertation develops Accumulated Contexts, a new approach to the ethical recontextualisation and study of looted archaeological material. The approach traces the different contexts through which objects have moved and acquired meaning. It is applied to a corpus of 1,616 fragments of Apulian red-figure pottery seized at the Geneva Freeport in 2014, focusing particularly on the Katabasis and Apotheosis volute-kraters.
By combining archaeological, archival, law-enforcement and spatial evidence, the dissertation connects four contexts: seizure, production, the looted landscape and the archaeological landscape. It demonstrates how aspects of lost context can be recovered while remaining explicit about uncertainty, fragmentation and the effects of looting.
