The collection of inscribed marble fragments, known as the Album of Herculaneum, has recently been recognised as one of the potentially most important sources on Roman slavery and demography.
The paper revisits the current debate, presenting a new interpretation of the document, its structure and function, as well as exploring the wider implications for our understanding of slavery and manumission in first century Herculaneum.
