Daniel Smith - New Postdoc at the Department of the study of religion
Daniel started as a postdoc on 1 October and is affiliated the 'Gods, Games and the Socioecological Landscapes' project.
I am an Evolutionary Anthropologist by training, having completed my PhD in 2017 at University College London (UCL) where I conducted fieldwork using experimental games to explore cooperation among the Agta, a population of Filipino hunter-gatherers. Since 2016 I have worked at the University of Bristol Medical School, both within the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) birth cohort study and as a Senior Research Associate in Epidemiology. I have a keen interest in both evolutionary areas – such as cooperation, human behavioural ecology and cultural evolution – and epidemiological topics – including causal inference, longitudinal data analysis methods and the relationships between religion and health/behaviour. I am particularly interested in the intersection of these disciplines, such as applying causal inference methods and using longitudinal population-based studies to answer evolutionary research questions, as well as broader meta-science issues which impact both, such as Open Science practices, preregistration and the importance of sharing data and analysis code. At Aarhus, I'll be working with Ben Purzycki as a post-doc on his 'Gods, Games and the Socioecological Landscapes' project. Outside of academia, I foster cats, attempt (and often fail) to grow vegetables, and enjoy travelling.
