Exploring Chinese Language Teaching in the Age of AI

Funded by CAS seed funding, on 28 August 2026, China Studies hosted the workshop, “Task-Based Language Teaching and Learning in the Age of AI: Practice and Perspectives from the Field,”organised by Dr Chun Zhang (China Studies) and Dr Ross Deans-Kristensen-McLachlan (the Department of Linguistics).

The event gathered Chinese language teachers, foreign language instructors, Master’s and PhD students, both on site and online, to discuss practical applications of GAI in foreign /Chinese language teaching.

Two guest speakers, Juan Yang from Helsinki University, Finland, gave a talk on Designing AI-assisted Workflows for Meaningful Chinese Production. Another guest speaker, Qi Zhang from Dublin City University, Ireland,gave us a talk on Translating in the AI Era. Both talks were positively received by participants. An interactive session on integrating GAI tools into classroom is conducted.
