Frédéric Spillemaeker - New Postdoc at the Department of History and Classical Studies

Frédéric Spillemaeker joins the project Republic of Newsletters. International Republicanism in the Making of Democratic Political Cultures 1815-1840 where he will investigate the originality of republicanism in “Gran Colombia”.

Frédéric Spillemaeker is a Postdoctoral researcher at the Department of History and Classical Studies at Aarhus University. He is a member of the editorial boards of Nuevo Mundo Mundos Nuevos journal and the Institut Français d’Études Andines (IFEA) publishing house. He has been a Postdoctoral researcher and head of office of the IFEA in Colombia and a scientific member of the École des Hautes Études Hispaniques et Ibériques (Casa de Velázquez, Madrid, Spain). He holds a PhD in History and Civilization from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris, France).

He is a historian primarily specialized in war, revolution, and republicanism. His most recent research also explores environmental issues during armed conflicts. His first monograph Plebe, Caudillismo y Cesarismo. Las guerras de Independencia de Nueva Granada y Venezuela 1789-1831 (Editorial Universidad El Rosario, Bogota, 2026) sheds light on irregular war and popular leadership. It shows how a revolutionary war can create lasting new regimes of authority in a society.

He is now a member of the project “Republic of Newsletters. International Republicanism in the Making of Democratic Political Cultures 1815-1840”, led by Nicolai von Eggers Mariegaard (Aarhus University).  Within this project, he will investigate the originality of republicanism in “Gran Colombia” (Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Venezuela).
