Noa Evers - New PhD student at the Department of Archeology and Heritage Studies

Noa Evers is enrolled as a PhD student from 1 September with the project: “Shaping the Arctic: Postcolonial Memory in Cultural Heritage Initiatives of the Arctic Council.”

My name is Noa, and I’m excited to join the Department of Archeology and Heritage Studies as a 4+4 PhD fellow. I hold a BA in Scandinavian Studies from the University of Amsterdam and am currently enrolled in a MA in European Studies at Aarhus University, where I developed a strong interest in questions of memory, identity, and postcolonialism in a Nordic context.

My PhD project, “Shaping the Arctic: Postcolonial Memory in Cultural Heritage Initiatives of the Arctic Council,” investigates how postcolonial memory is reflected in the Arctic Council’s cultural heritage projects and how these narratives influence national policy frameworks in Denmark, Greenland, and Canada. By drawing on memory studies, cultural heritage studies, critical geopolitics, and Indigenous studies, the project explores how heritage can function as a form of soft power in the Arctic region.

The Arctic Council presents a unique case of intergovernmental cooperation that actively involves Indigenous organisations. My project critically examines how these perspectives are represented and negotiated, and how cultural heritage becomes a tool for shaping narratives about sovereignty, identity, and history in a postcolonial context.

I’m looking forward to being part of the academic community at Moesgaard and Nobelparken and to exchanging ideas across disciplines.
