Stephanie Lee Ellison – New PhD student at the Department of Anthropology

Stephanie Lee Ellison will be working on a project that investigates nonverbal interaction and collaborative sense-making under conditions of uncertainty in clinical medicine.

My research centers on the body and movement, exploring physical rhythms, sensory experience, space, and shared attention shape communication and collaboration.

My PhD project investigates nonverbal interaction and collaborative sense-making under conditions of uncertainty in clinical medicine.
I’ll be conducting fieldwork in several clinics at Silkeborg Regional Hospital. After 25+ years teaching Pilates and somatic movement in rehabilitative settings, I am exploring how to incorporate movement-based methods in anthropological inquiry to better understand clinical experiences.
I’m also part of a project on neurodiverse collaboration in the classroom at AU with P.I., Katrin Heimann.

My MA from Choreomundus focused on contemporary community water ritual and dance practices in southern England, and I hold a BA in Communications with minors in Japanese and Political Science. My interdisciplinary approach is shaped by an interdisciplinary life that also includes work at NPR, public relations and advertising, art projects, circus arts, and more than a few service industry jobs along the way.
