Søren Michael Sindbæk Appointed Professor
Søren Michael Sindbæk has been appointed professor of the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies effective from August 1, 2021.
Søren Michael Sindbæk has a PhD from Aarhus University and has since 2012 been employed as associate professor at Aarhus University. In the same year, he became research director at the Sapere Aude programme, which is a collaboration between Aarhus University and the University of York. The project examined exchange networks and urbanisation in global medieval archaeology. In 2014, he was appointed professor MSO, where he was to conduct research in urban archaeology.
He is currently affiliated with Centre for Urban Network Evolutions (UrbNet), where he conducts research into urban archaeology. He has, among other things, uncovered how cities worldwide were connected to each other in the Viking Age, and what the widespread networks meant for development. Most recently, in a new study, he explored Viking-age metalwork by following the entire production chain from raw materials, moulds and crucibles to finished metal products by geochemical methods of analysis. The result provides new knowledge on the background for metalworkers' choice of materials in the Viking Age.
"In connection with my professorship, I will teach and conduct research in cities and social networks in the Viking Age and the Middle Ages, especially in connection with the basic research centre UrbNet. I am particularly interested in examining what contact with strangers outside people's daily communities have meant throughout history, and how we can explore it using archaeological methods," says Søren M. Sindbæk.
