Rashmi Upadhyay - New Postdoc at the Department of Anthropology

Rashmi Upadhyay is a postdoc at CAS from 1 October. She will be working with the project" Antimicrobial Resistance and Labour Migration across Healthcare Boundaries in Northern South Asia”.

Rashmi Upadhyay is working as a Postdoc fellow in the project “Antimicrobial Resistance and Labour Migration across Healthcare Boundaries in Northern South Asia” since 1st October. Through this project, she is keen to understand the global concerns of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and will also investigate the spread of AMR, drug resistance tuberculosis (DRTB) and impact of COVID-19 through labour migration in Nepal. Further, the study will allow her to understand the development and implementation of health and safety policies at work, and how individuals experience health vulnerabilities and embody risks in their everyday lives.

Rashmi Upadhyay’s PhD thesis was focused on exploring the living and working conditions among Nepalese migrant labourers working in the coal mines of Meghalaya, India. She had conducted extensive, multi-sited, ethnographic fieldwork in the coal mines of Meghalaya, India and in villages of Eastern Nepal. Her core research interest centers around transnational labour migration and borderland studies focusing on risk and its social construction, concept of body and embodiment, migrants’ health and violence, social remittances and migrants’ return to home. Her other research areas include village ethnography, tribal ethnography, anthropology of mining and mobility.
