Classical Studies at Aarhus University and the research project “Cultural encounter as a precondition for European Identity” invite to a seminar on the reception of Antiquity in early modern Europe. The ancient cultures of Greece and Rome were an inevitable basis for education and cultural expressions in the successive eras. In the Renaissance, Antiquity gained the special status of a model culture to be imitated in art, literature, and thinking. During the seminar, we shall investigate the “metadiscourse” on the use of Antiquity; the explicit discussion among theologians and renaissance humanists on why and how they studied Antiquity and implemented it in their own writings. Students and researchers will approach the complex discussion of importing one culture into another from different points of view, as apparent in commentaries, treatises, sculptures, grammars, letters, etc.
