Linking Faith and Love: Luther on Beatitudes and Duties

The Sermon on the Mount represents in an exemplary manner the distinction of two sets of injunctions we find in the bible by presenting them in their interface. The first are the beatitudes themselves, the gift that in trust is given. The other is the commandments, the categorical universalism they imply. Considering Luther’s distinction between blessedness of faith and holiness of love, this presentation probes on how the two are related, the singularity of faith and the universality of love.
