Abstract:

This paper investigates how a conflict between two pressures - towards what we might label intrinsicness and simplicity, respectively - generates problems for various philosophical views on dispositions and disposition ascriptions. Recognition of the conflict allows us to diagnose many of the notorious difficulties with conditional analyses of dispositions, and offers a fruitful perspective for seeking solutions. It also raises questions for categoricalist, functionalist and primitivist views.
