Theological Education at Scandinavian Universities after the Reformation

The first Scandinavian universities were founded in Uppsala and Copenhagen at the end of the 15th century. The introduction of Lutheranism in both countries affected the shape of these institutions to a large extent regarding for example structure, educational contents or audience. Nevertheless, the diverging political and religious situations in both kingdoms are also reflected in the fate of their universities: The university of Copenhagen was already reopened and reorganized on behalf of Christian III, whereas its Swedish counterpart had to struggle for existence in the 16th century. The research project deals with the question how the theological education at these Scandinavian universities was transformed in the wake of the Reformation, particularly with respect to the instruction of the Protestant clergy. The talk will provide a brief insight into the topic and the current state of research.
