Being an inquiry into the ethical, Emilie L. Mortensens PhD project, with the working title of Building BetterFutures, explores everyday struggles to reconstitute good lives and selves among single middleclass men from Syria in exile in the Jordanian capital of Amman. The project seeks to show the creative ways these young men respond to a new situation with different potentialities from which to reimagine a future and themselves. Focusing on such themes as love, friendship and care, the project aims at understanding what is emerging in exile rather than what is lost, thus nuancing the narrative of displacement with descriptions of how lives are molded and lines of care emerges through exile. The project critically engages in anthropological theory on displacement, morality and subjectivity formation, which together brings a different perspective on the moral becoming of young men living through precarious times following the 2011 Arab uprisings.
