Emma-Cecilie Voxnæs Søndergaard - New PhD Student at the Department of Anthropology
Emma-Cecilie Voxnæs Søndergaard will be instigating fertility ambitions among young adults in urban Denmark.
My name is Emma-Cecilie, but I go by Cille. I've been studying anthropology at Aarhus University since 2018, where I completed my bachelor's degree on exchange in Iceland in the middle of Covid.
Therefore, I needed to get out and away from Zoom and screens and took a gap year to try my hand at anthropology in practice as a junior consultant in an anthropological analysis company – I have been working there for 3 years. Now I'm looking forward to starting my 4+4 PhD with you, where I focus on the declining fertility rate in Denmark – specifically looking at the intersection between the intimate and the political. Here, I will investigate fertility ambitions among young adults in urban Denmark (especially Aarhus and Copenhagen) with a focus on individual and societal factors that influence the decision to have, delay or not to have children.
In addition, I look into state interests in reproduction and the (in)effectiveness of policy measures. Much in the spirit of the project, I have to birth a baby myself before I can get started, which is why I'm on maternity leave from March to December - I'm looking forward to joining you more “permanently” in 2026 and to learn more about a topic that I think is both important, exciting and complex.
