Ida Appel Vardinghus-Nielsen - New PhD student at the Department of Anthropology

Ida started as a PhD student on 1 September with the "Moral experiments in intimate and divine relations: First-person ethics among Christian youth in the Faroe Islands".

My name is Ida, and I am a new 5+3 Ph.d.-student at the department of anthropology. I have a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Anthropology from Aarhus University, and I am very excited to be back at Moesgaard Campus!

My Ph.d.-project is titled Moral experiments in intimate and divine relations: First-person ethics among Christian youth in the Faroe Islands. It explores how Faroese Christian youths navigate between and experiment with moral values in a time where life in faith has become an increasingly individualized matter and moral issues such as abortion and LGBT+ rights create political polarization in the characteristically intimate and interconnected sociality of the Faroe Islands.

I will be conducting fieldwork in both rural and urban Faroe Islands on how youths/teenagers affiliated with free churches experience a budding personal relationship with God while navigating the moral turbulence of adolescence and new moral.
