Kasper Vere - New PhD student at the Department of Philosophy and History of Ideas

Kasper Vere will be pursuing a project in the metaphilosophy and epistemology of metaphysics.

My name is Kasper Vere and I’m a new PhD student in Philosophy. I received a master’s degree from the University of Oslo and will now be pursuing a project in the metaphilosophy and epistemology of metaphysics here at Aarhus.

I am broadly interested in theoretical philosophy, with a focus on philosophy of language, epistemology and the nature, purpose, and limitations of philosophy as a field of inquiry.

My project will be drawing on contemporary pragmatist insights in epistemology, language and philosophy of science, aiming to renew our understanding of metaphysics as a form of inquiry. I want to propose a pragmatist reconstruction of metaphysics, reconceptualizing its purpose, aims and methods to better fit with the semantic and epistemic limitations of humans as natural creatures. Rather than viewing metaphysics as an attempt to describe reality “as it is in itself,” the proposed approach treats it as an epistemic and conceptual activity embedded within our socio-linguistic practices. The project seeks to identify a middle path between traditional metaphysical ambitions of “getting at reality as it really is” and full-on metaphysical quietism.

The project seeks to put metaphysics on a new practice-oriented path which hopefully will allow metaphysicians to analyze and contribute meaningfully to inquiry without aspiring to unattainable final descriptions of reality.
