Patrick Meehan - New postdoc at the Department of History and Classical Studies

Patrick Meehan will work on the project: Undeutsche: Racism as Form of Social Practice in Medieval Prussia and Livonia.

I am a historian of colonization and colonial society in the later medieval Baltic, with special interest in environmental history, postcolonial studies, and Indigenous history. I am joining the department at Aarhus University as a postdoctoral researcher on the project “Undeutsche: Racism as Form of Social Practice in Medieval Prussia and Livonia.” My first book project, tentatively titled Reclaiming the Promised Land: Crusade, Colonialism, and Wilderness in the Late Medival Baltic takes the region of Prussia as a case study for examining the relationship between the ideologies and practices of Christian colonizers, with special attention to the imagination of Prussia as both a pagan “wilderness” and a Christian “Promised Land.”
