In my PhD-project I examine decolonial potentials within contemporary art from Kalaallit Nunaat and the ways these practices address ongoing Danish coloniality. Drawing on collaborations, fieldwork, and critical autoethnography, I explore how decolonial awareness is negotiated in practice, how different artistic strategies engage with Danish–Kalaallit relations, and how positionality shapes both art production and research.
I am part of the research programme Cultural Transformations as well as the research unit Entangled Colonialities Collective (ECC), where I co-facilitate the reading group Reading Entangled Colonialities together with Freja Ruby Flejsborg.
I am also affiliated with AUNA, AU Centre for North Atlantic and Arctic Research, CRAPCC, Centre for Artistic Reasearch under Contemporary Conditions and UPAST – Memory and Heritage Research Center.
Part of my research and knowledge production stems from my work on the steering group of rum46, a small, non-profit exhibition space in Aarhus. My work there is multifaceted and includes roles such as steering group member, curator, treasurer, project leader, and fundraiser. I also use the space to engage in conversations with artists, activists, and cultural actors.
I am the chairperson of the art journal Passepartout, where I collaborate with researchers and artists, prepare special issues – currently the issue “SKIN” together with Laura Katrine Skinnebach and Edward Alan Payne.
I have organized several public events, including at Det Grønlandske Hus Aarhus. These include artist talks with Kalaallit artists, letter-writing workshops, and presentations about art from and about Kalaallit Nunaat.
I am always open for a conversation – about collaborations, research, or pursuing a PhD. Please feel free to reach out at grylindmerrild@cc.au.dk.
