The goal of Brazilian Studies is to apply knowledge about Brazil and the Portuguese language to real world problems and international issues. In addition to gaining knowledge of the fifth most spoken language in the world, students at Brazilian Studies are trained to think critically and express themselves effectively on topics such as migration, urbanization, economics, government and the environment. The focus is Brazil, but much of our research and teaching concerns transnational and transregional connections. The program provides students with important conceptual tools from the social sciences and humanities and is applied, and project-centered.
